A bit of history
CoastalNet was set up in 2008 to offer small businesses, predominantly on the Heritage Coastline in Suffolk, a forum for Networking with other individuals or companies. The idea behind its creation came first and foremost from a lack of opportunity in the area to Network and also from the perceived failings of other networking groups in the major settlements nearby.
The majority of the groups seemed to be based on what I call ‘The naughty step mentality’, that’s is to say that members were reprimanded if they didn’t attend meetings regularly, they were chastised if they didn’t provide referrals and they were castigated if they failed to bring guests and for all this negativity they were charged sometimes substantial fees for the privilege of being treated like errant schoolchildren.
CoastalNet is the complete antithesis of this and has thrived due to not only the resolute attitudes and sense of humour of the regular attendees but also because the atmosphere at the meetings is very relaxed, positive and friendly with encouragement being the main point along with a certain amount of friendly banter.
Members are encouraged to make friends with people in the group and to not be afraid to have a laugh as ‘people buy people’ and it is a lot easier to do business with someone that you get along with. We have found that there is a substantial amount of referrals being passed between members and also and quite simply, an awful lot of reciprocal business completed simply because of this.
‘Local Business Food Miles’ has always been a mainstay of CoastalNet where we like to encourage people to work with people from the local area rather than national suppliers to keep the wealth within the community and also to build relationships of trust with likeminded individuals. As such group members take turns to give presentations about themselves and their products along with guest speakers who come along to educate about subjects that are applicable to everybody who is self-employed, whether it is Social media, presentation skills, employment law and the like.
To sum up, CoastalNet is a fun, relaxed, informative and friendly group and one that encourages anyone from seasoned veterans of the networking circuit to ‘first timers’ and new start-ups.
There are generally between 30 and 40 local business people who attend our once a month meetings regularly, at a cost of only £5.00 it seems to be an important date in everyone’s calendar and one that is easily affordable. It is an important facet of the group to maintain cost effectiveness to maximise the benefit.
There are usually 2 x 20 minute presentations given by attendees about their business, charity or maybe some business advice. There is time for informal networking before and after these presentations.
If you are interested in presenting then please contact us.
